Our client, the WV Society of CPA’s, wanted a video to entice college students to consider a career as a Certified Public Accountant. Four CPA’s were chosen to represent the array of occupational paths open to those who hold that professional designation. All were interviewed about why they chose accounting as a major, why they pursued the additional educational and test requirements to obtain their CPA credentials and the lifestyle it affords. The overarching goal was to showcase the profession as one with “No Limits.”
The storyline was produced entirely from interviews, with limited broll, and no narration. The idea was to shoot the interviews, in an expansive open space, with prime lenses, to create a cinematic shallow depth of field. This technique creates beautiful, interesting images that focus the viewer’s attention on what the interviewees reveal about their chosen profession.
The video was produced utilizing MotionMasters two brand new FS5 4K cameras. Interviews were shot using 2 cameras, positioned at different angels. A Camera was shooting a traditional interview angle using a 50mm Zeiss prime lens. B Camera was set at an extreme profile angle using an 85mm Zeiss prime lens. Camera B’s job was to gather extreme close ups of interviewees face and hands to be used as cutaways in post.
The entire project was shot in 4K, but edited in a 1920×1080 HD sequence. This gave us the ability to create new focal lengths in post-production. This means A Camera’s 50mm prime lens shot, in post, could be zoomed into an 85mm shot with no loss of quality or clarity of picture, with the same holding true for B camera. This technique gives the editor the creative ability and flexibility to produce a quick paced, dynamic editing style.
